Review of Million Dollar Arm (2014) by Clem A — 17 May 2014
To succeed in the sports world, you may have to go out of the country for talent. Struggling sports agent J.B. Bernstein played by Golden Globe winner & Mad Men star Jon Hamm & his business partner Aash played by Aasif Mandvi have just lost their top client & know if they donâ??t do something big then their recruitment agency will go bust.
Bernstein has a flash of inspiration while watching a game of Indian cricket on television. Why search for the next pitching sensation in America, where everyone else is looking, when you can find one in India? J.
B. travels to Mumbai & with the help of Ray, a cantankerous veteran scout played by Oscar winner Alan Arkin searches for Indiaâ??s best bowler (the pitcher in cricket) in a nationwide contest dubbed Million Dollar Arm.
The competition quickly draws 40, 000 hopeful athletes in search of their big break. Two come out on top, 18-year-olds Rinku played by Life of Pi star Suraj Sharma & Dinesh played by Slumdog Millonaire â??s Madhur Mittal.
Soon they are headed for America to be trained by framed pitching coach Tom House played by Golden Globe nominee Bill Paxton. The boys are experiencing American life for the first time and Bernstein, with the aid of his charming friend, Brenda played by In a World.
.. star Lake Bell learns a valuable life lesson about teamwork, commitment, & what it means to be a family. Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie & screenwriter Thomas McCarthy deliver an uplifting, heartwarming, inspiring true story.
The performances from the entire cast were solid & everyone was believable in their roles especially Suraj Sharma & Madhur Mittal who actually could pitch in the major leagues. The chemistry between Jon Hamm & Lake Bell was charming & heartfelt.
It was cool to see my homeland of India. It was nice to see a clean cut film that doesnâ??t have violence, sex/nudity, strong language or crude humor in it. You donâ??t have to be a sports fan to enjoy this film & for that I say SEE THIS FILM.
