Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Sam C — 21 Jan 2009

Let's get one thing out of the way: the cinematography is amazing! What really stood out to me was the scene in the woods when Gabriel Byrne is about to off John Turturro's character and he let's him go. The camera dollies and follows Turturro as he begins to run off. This may just be me, but I love scenes in woods where the camera swoops around and there are all these trees in the front/background with a character running through them. It just seems so intricate.

All that aside this was a solid film. It took me a little bit to fully get into it and figure out who was who. The scene where Leo jumps out of the window and shoots up the gangster with a tommy gun for about 30 seconds makes me think of that scene in Robocop where one of the businessmen gets shot up in the office by the prototype. The ending is a blast too. A great blend of 1920's gangsterism mixed with a brooding film-noir style that just oozes flavor.
