Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Jacob S — 06 May 2009
"I told you so.".
Gabriel Byrne = Bogart!! Brilliant, brilliant movie in the tradition of "The Big Sleep" or "The Maltese Falcon.".
But this is clearly stamped with the Coen's own brand of humor and movie-making and works better than any of their other movies made in homage to the old B&W flicks ("Hudsucker Proxy," "The Man Who Wasn't There"). Maybe it's because Byrne can act circles around the leads of those other pictures. Maybe it's the depth of the cast -- Buschemi is on camera for only a few seconds but sears his character into your brain as one of the lynchpins of the whole complicated mess.
When I saw "Road to Perdition" I thought: Eh. This is just another way to make "The Godfather" again. When I see "Miller's Crossing" I think: I want to see that again! In the comedy "The Freshman," there's a film class that obsesses over "The Godfather." You could spend just as good of a semester poring over the layers in this movie.
