Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Itamar K — 03 May 2010
The Coens' third film is a breakthrough. Two excellent but low-key films - Blood Simple and Raising Arizona - are followed by an epic thriller with a scope that exceeds those two by miles, but the Coens never lose their grip on the situation and the film never loses its focus or its pace.
The unique Coen voice is still in mid-development, but this is the film that would lead directly to masterpieces like Fargo and No Country for Old Men; and taken at face value, Miller's Crossing stands by its own right as one of the best, most finely crafted and smartly written gangaster films of all time.
