Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Sanity Assassin ! — 13 May 2011
Verna (Marcia Gay Hardens character): "what are you doing?" Tom Reagan (Gabriel Brynes character): "walking". Verna: "don't let on more than you have to". Tom: "in the rain". These few lines sum up the way the script goes centered around Tom.
Much cleverer than say Road to Perdition, a film about the same subject AND much less boring than scorsese's "the Departed" (which is a re-make anyway) while just as smart.
The script rolls like an old film noir thriller with cameo's from Steve Buscemi and Frances Mcdormand. Not quite as good as my Coen brothers favourite "Fargo" but still sublime!
Their serious efforts are much better than their comedy's and still contain elements of black humour anyway.
Pokerfaced & contemplative storytelling.
