Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Peter N — 21 May 2011
Just watched this film for the first time since it was released on VHS in the early 90's. Since then, I've become a huge fan of the Coen brothers and seen pretty much everything they have done since.
Miller's Crossing holds up pretty well and is an entertaining contribution to the gangster genre that was resurgent in the 90's thanks to films like Goodfellas. All the Coen staples are here: stylized dialogue, quirky characters, elaborate set pieces, fat men screaming (yes, look at all of their movies throughout the 90's and you'll notice a scene where a fat man is screaming).
My favorite set piece in this film is the attempted assassination of Leo played by Albert Finney. Wonderfully over-the-top. Also, John Turturro's monologue before he thinks that Gabriel Byrne is going to cap him is his finest moment on screen.
