Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Shawn E — 03 Feb 2010
The film that cemented the Coen Brothers as serious filmmaking talents. The plot is a bit muddled and confusing with lots of interweaving characters and situations, but, as with all Coen Brothers films, repeat viewings bring to light elements that were seldom noticed before.
The set design and art direction is absolutely stunning and the cinematography is the best work that Director of Photography (and future film director) Barry Sonnenfeld would bring to a Coen Bros. movie.
This movie may favor style over substance, but what a style it is.
