Review of Millennium Actress (2002) by Takashi M — 19 Jan 2008
In certain respects Satoshi Kon's films remind me more of Last Year at Marienbad (#3 on my all-time list) than any other director's working today. His cuts through time and space and merging of the two fit right in with Resnais' rapid fire jumps back and forth between mirror worlds.
Satoshi Kon knows how to use an overpowering score to heighten emotion better than anyone I can think of, with the exception of Kar-Wai of course. This is a spectacular film. It lacks the polish, budget, and technology to be as visually stunning and consciousness transforming as Paprika, but one can certainly see how the two are connected and that the same genius was behind both.
Satoshi Kon is quickly becoming one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers as I see more and more of his films. I may be overrating it with a 4, but I did love it. I think it's probably the best movie about movies since Mulholland Drive and could certainly be placed within the same category as Cinema Paradiso.
