A truly beautiful film. I went into it without a clue, and came out witnessing a brilliant work. This film is perhaps the most mature and realistic animated films I have ever seen, and proves that a great animated film can be powered by reality rather than fantasy.
The characters are enduring, the animation is fantastic, and the movie is all around beautiful. The film also presents a fantastic trip through Japanese history, and the great Japanese cinema of the forties and fifties.
I found allusions to Kurosawa, Ozu, and Honda, all of which hold a special place in film history. A brilliant film in it's own right, tis is one of the finest animated films I have ever seen.
