Review of Milk? (2012) by Eric M — 11 Jul 2012
"Transporting, wrenching, inspirational," here is a film to which all the hyperbole may truly apply. What raises Gus Van Sant's brilliant film above other biopics and docudramas is its scope, and the way it brings sincerity and humanity to what could have easily been a contrived political statement or an exploitive gimmick.
It is not only a startlingly convincing portrait of the real human being within the American hero, or a well-composed chronology of his career, but it is also a beautiful ode to the millions who needed him and stood - still stand - beside him in the fight for justice.
Gus Van Sant's sensitive direction, Sean Penn's uncanny performance, and Dustin Lance Black's authentic screenplay make this one of the most moving and inspiring films in years; a distinctly American story of ordinary people changing the world.
