A mesmerizing performance by Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in the U.S. (as a San Francisco city Supervisor), anchors this historical drama. This film captures the discrimination that gays faced in living their lives in the 1970s and how Milk felt he had to run for office to make things better.
The movie re-creates the time very well, with period styles and news clips. And I can't say enough about Penn's performance, where he creates a complete person. If it suffered from anything, it's the fact that this is a movie about political campaigning and activism. While the story is important and consequential, we are left with a certain detachment because most of us do not move in such deeply political circles.
