Review of Milk (2008) by Ryan Gibbons — 26 Sep 2010
I thought this was a well made film but it was also very over hyped. The acting alone makes it quite an achievement. Sean Penn has rarely been so brilliant but he has had a very brilliant career. James Franco was perfect for the role and he should consider himself very lucky that he got a role that suited him so well.
Josh Brolin plays Dan White, a very complex figure, flawlessly. Cleve Jones was also a very complex figure who at times seemed to question his own feelings. Milk is just flat out brilliantly acted but the quality of the film is really not that amazing.
It is what it is, and it's a well acted and made film. It's sad and uplifting and inspiring and dark. This will more than likely change the way you view things. I recommend it, should be shown in schools I think personally, however I know that it will never happen because we will never be rid of bible thumping bigots who pretend to be righteous by pretending that "God" wants them to commit hate crimes.
