Van Sant's film on the gay right activist and San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk, based in the late seventies. While the screenplay is not too clever in balancing Milk's tremendous events in his personal and political life, the visual style of Van Sant and the strong performance by Sean Penn carry the film and make it a powerful and compelling one.
