Review of Milk (2008) by Nino M — 15 Mar 2011
You are not wrong, you are not sick, and god does not hate you.
Harvey Milk resides in a section of San Francisco known as Castro. Castro is known for being filled with drugs, homosexuals, and police brutality. Milk believes he can seek political office; and if elected, prove to the rest of the world that homosexuals are people too. Milk is elected to office and begins cleaning up Castro; but by being elected, those against his beliefs become more and more aggressive.
"Worry about gun control, not marijuana patrol.".
Gus Van Sant, director of Paranoid Park, Elephant, Good Will Hunting, and My Own Private Idaho, delivers Milk. The storyline for this picture is outstanding. Harvey Milk is a compelling character who overcame great obstacles and seeing his story unfold was breathtaking. Sean Penn delivers a remarkable performance that is both spellbinding and inspiring. He is supported by a marvelous supporting cast that includes James Franco, Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, Joseph Cross, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna.
"There's man's law and there's god's law.".
I generally try to see films that have received Academy Awards and this film stood out as a movie I should see. I was disappointed the year Penn won Best Actor for this movie (I was rooting for Viggo Mortensen); however, I can easily see why this movie received such high accolades. Penn was remarkable in this movie and delivers an all time great performance. I strongly recommend seeing this picture.
"You can argue with me. You can't argue with god.".
Grade: A+.
