Review of Milk (2008) by Bradley H — 15 Jun 2011
As well-constructed and skillfully written as it is, this film is still predominantly propelled by the powerful performance of Sean Penn. It glides virtually seamlessly through the major events of Milk's life and Penn effectively shows the gradual transformation of a man with a hidden life into the leader of a movement.
I wanted more development of Dan White, whose character arch was partially obscured. I also disliked the prophetic overlay created by repeatedly bashing the audience over the head with Milk's allusions to his own demise.
Overall, this is an effective biopic. I especially appreciated that the film did not hide some of the dishonest aspects of Milk's political career. I do not agree with much of Harvey Milk's politics, but I could still cheer for him as he took on Anita Bryant and her ilk.
