Review of Milius (2013) by Stephen C — 20 Nov 2013
Director John Milius was one of the new filmakers of the 1970s who gave us some of the most vital films of that era.
Milius was responsible for outstanding films such as Big Wednesday and The Wind and the Lion.
This documentary profiles the man and the many myths that surronded himand how thanks to a right wing image he became a pariah in Hollywood.
Its easy to show Milius as some right wing gun nut, but thanks to interviews with his peers we get a much more complex view of the man.
The film is quite moving towrds the end as Milius suffers from a stroke and loses the power to speak, which according to his friends is the most devastating thing to happen to a man with so many stories.
But with Typical gusto 6 months later Milius is backing shooting guns and trying to get a long dreamed of film Of ghengis Khan off the ground.
One hopes that he does get the film made afterall this was the man who gave Dirty Harry his Magnum speech and Robert Shaw the classic USS Indianapolis specch from Jaws .
Any man responsible for these and many other greta movie moments deserves a film like this.
