Review of Miles Ahead (2016) by Yard A — 25 May 2016
Critics: "Nonlinear," "non-generic," "historically obscure," "thematically scattershot..." Interestingly, these were all the same criticisms of Miles music during the period preceding the film's moment. That was arguably his most personally expressive period, and in the same way, Cheadle has somehow avoided the commercial traps, navigated an original course, and made a unique and honestly humane statement.
As consumers of Miles we could always hardly be anything but crashers of his unintended house party, drinking his booze, blasting his stereo, giving his art unsolicited Continental analysis, and fleecing him of his personal expression. Just think of him as he puts his finger to his lips and whispers "shhhhh..." Listen. And watch Miles Ahead.
