Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Bill K — 07 Mar 2008
I love this film. I love its satire of decadence, its love for Mildred's weakness, its anxiety about the future of American opulence (in the middle of war). Crawford is magnificent. Even the stock characters emerge with a kind of roundness, despite their fate as targets of satire.
From the film's perspective, humans are all to be satirized, and in spite of this can all be loved, even the "evil" Vida who suffers from a particularly trenchant case of adolescence...
