Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Daniel P — 06 Sep 2007
It's impossible not to watch Mildred Pierce and think of Mommie Dearest. If Christina can be believed, this is how she actually saw herself - toiling endlessly to support her ungrateful daughter. No wire hangers!
Otherwise, good use of film noir elements (story recounted in numerous flashbacks told to hard-boiled policeman) and great performance by Crawford, although best performance is by Eve Arden, the sarcastic, terminally single friend with great (and surprisingly racy) one-liners. That character became a fixture of latter-day sitcoms.
