Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Drew M — 08 Apr 2008
I'm really not sure how I feel about this one. The ideology behind it is that being an independent woman in WWII/post-WWII America does a number of terrible things:
1. Your youngest child will die when you attempt to go on a date.
2. Your oldest child will attempt to steal your husband away and end up murdering him instead.
3. No matter how successful you become running your own business, you'll end up right back with your cheating husband and a housewife all over again.
So, from that standpoint, women should do the right thing and never leave the house...right?
Joking, of course, but how do you cope with such a disturbing ideological undercurrent in such a fascinating and well-constructed (and well-performed!) film? I know I had a similar reaction a few weeks ago to "The Philadelphia Story," but re-watching "Mildred Pierce" was much more disturbing.
I guess Robin Wood would be pleased!
