Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Mesha R — 06 Jan 2011
La Crawford was at a low ebb when she was cast in Curtiz' adaptation of James M. Cain's daring novel (daring as in Raymond Chandler dared him to write something other than detective yarns) but revived her career with this tempestuous melodrama.
Crawford eats up the role as if she were mad(e) for it, her own life as it was aptly mirroring the all-consuming obsessions of its titular heroine. Sparkling support is provided by a superb cast (most notably Jack Carson and young Ann Blyth) but it is the diva's show all the way.
Extra stars for Max Steiner's devilishly dramatic score and some suitably noirish cinematography and lighting. Saturday afternoon movie top ten.
