I'm not exactly sure why Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) feels compelled to live an unhappy and miserable existence just to try (and fail) repeatedly to please her spoiled social-climbing daughter Veda.

But she does. From a divorced waitress, to a restaurant owner of a successful chain, and then back to boderline penniless doormat we watch hopelessly as Mildred spirals downwards for 2 hrs. Her guilt is based solely on the premise that a child's happiness should always come first when parenting.

Brilliant performance by Crawford. A depressing; yet entertaining film. Would like it for my own collection (if I can ever find it on DVD).
