Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Adam R — 25 Nov 2014
Easily transcends the melodrama genre because of the twisted psychology behind the characters. Most of the genre's films are characterized by at least a partial grounding in psycho-sexual perversity, but the disturbing undertones here go much deeper than others of its ilk.
Joan Crawford gives a great, rather subdued performance as a put-upon mother whose devotion to her daughter ultimately leads to murder, incest, and all-around emotional devastation. Slick characterization, a great score, wonderful performances, and the most memorable performances this side of film noir.
