Review of Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001) by Richard H — 05 Apr 2007
Not so much a documentary as a mockumentary. Those old enough to remember the Graham Taylor years will especially like this film. Ricky Tomlinson does a very good job of filling Graham's boots and Bradley Walsh puts in an equally great immitation of Phil Neale.
Lots of jokes all the way through which work well for both football fans and non-football fans. The scariest part of the movie is that its not that far from what is currently a truely deplorable England side.
The goal against Argentina is a stark reminder that we will never forget that they cheated us out of the 1986 world cup (give it another 50 years and we shall still be harping on about that one). I found myself laughing at the way that both Gazza and Terry (I had to smear blood all over my f*ckin shirt like the pr*ck I am) Butcher were also portraid.
A brief cameo from the scots and irish nicely cap off what is possibly an incredibly accurate description of what is currently going on in British football.
