Review of Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) by Lewis M — 09 Jul 2016
I had high hopes for this film... being a huge fan of Aubrey Plaza's work and Anna Kendrick's work as well- interesting women. But this film is really godawful (as in the person who edited this mess- really doesn't know the first thing about coherance in plot and character, let alone story telling.
What is genuinely suprising is that the cast which is good- seems to have shot a whole lot of extra funny material that wasn't included in this film(?!)- so I cannot blame the failure of the film on bad acting- it is just sheer incompetancy in editing and direction.
. The story made little sense- and there were no great scenes to tie the film together. The only actor- who really fared well IMAO was Anna Kendrick. Plaza was damn good in it as was Devine and Efron, but it seems to me that Kendrick has made so many movies- good and bad- that she has learned how to play the medium through experience, and can even shine in a piece of crap like Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates.
Sort of the like the way the actor of old horror movies Vincent Price used to ham it up and fill up the seats when he was making those old Roger Corman movies. He clearly knew his medium and he wasn't making art and something tells me Kendrick realized the same thing in the middle of production here.
As good as Plaza and Devine were in the lead roles- Anna Kendrick's experience making bad movies from time to time- outshines them all.
