Review of Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) by Lee S — 16 Jul 2016
Mike and Dave has its moments, mostly on the backs of terrific physical humour, a good premise and the clearly improv-inclined cast. However, it suffers immensely from terrible production (out of sync dialog, extras who wander into shots), zero character development or motivation, hilariously bad writing (full of unnecessary exposition) and barely, if any, character driven story.
M&D is a bad movie and like most American comedies, it's bad because the filmmakers and cast are more concerned with throwing as many random jokes at the audience, thinking quantity will win out, rather than actually telling a story and developing interesting and funny characters. It's the improv wave of comedy that's swept Hollywood for decades now and this movie seems to have taken it to an extreme.
