Review of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) by Alan L — 07 May 2011
This is the first movie I ever saw in an actual movie theater, every other time I saw a film on a large screen was in a school auditorium. At the time I was deeply in love with the picture, but now that I'm older and have seen the source material from Japan, I can tell you that this movie only proves that without Japanese assistance, "Power Rangers" is just childish junk.
While the original "Super Sentai" franchise was admittedly silly but high-spirited and inventive, "Power Rangers" frequently came off as borderline self-parody. Especially in this movie.
The only compliments I can give it is that the higher budget occasionally made a difference, and Paul Freeman's villain comes across as the only real performance. If you want to see this material at its peak, search the web for the original Sentai programs and skip this altogether.
Even without subtitles the original is more tolerable than this flop.
