The movie is terrific. To clear up some confusion, the picture is about the BATTLE. Ninety percent plus of the dialog is expositional, acquainting the viewer with the military situation, which is the point.
It isn't an exploration of character, and doesn't pretend to be. But it is quite accurate historically, and the action sequences give the audience a real sense of what dive bombing a warship in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire must be like.
That's the real point.
