Review of Midway (1976) by Jamie T — 07 Feb 2010
Like A BRIDGE TOO FAR, this loads itself down with an all-star cast and a script which makes little sense, so that at the end of it one knows virtually nothing more about Midway or how we won it than one did to start with.
Still, it's always good to see Charlton Heston, Toshiro Mifune, James Coburn, Robert Mitchum, and the like, and Hal Holbrook manages to bring some life to his small role as a codebreaker. The use of stock footage throughout, mixed with the TV-level effects done for the film itself, make MIDWAY seem distinctly cheap.
It's best left for war-film completists.
