Review of Midnight Sun (2006) by Rob F — 19 Apr 2008
Good music and nicely understated performances highlight this first love movie from Japan. YUI does a good job with a role that's tailor made for the young J-pop/rock star. Her kind of unrefined acting skills work to her advantage as she convincingly portrays a socially awkward and shy teen who struggles with a unique illness and first love.
The film actually skips a big chunk of narrative as she battles her disease but maybe that was for the best since it would have been asking a lot from the young star who never had any acting experience.
What pushes this movie above the crowded field of heart-tugger films is the use of authentic songs performed by YUI, particularly Good-Bye Days.
