Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Eric H — 03 Aug 2016
Midnight Special, written and directed by Jeff Nichols, is in essence a story about a boy, his parents and the lengths they are willing to go to to keep him safe.
Without a doubt Alton played by Jaeden Lieberher and Roy played by Michael Shannon are the stand out performers in this film. Their relationship is what really drives this movie and makes the audience truly care about these characters. Even Lucas played by Joel Edgerton and Alton's mother, played by Kirsten Dunst, deliver solid performances and make me feel as though they really care for Alton's safety despite them having very limited back stories.
My only gripes with this movie are that I felt it could have been slightly shorter and that the FBI in this movie never really felt like they had a purpose for going after Alton other than them being intrigued by his abilities.
Once again, Jeff Nichols has delivered a solid film. He continues to leave his own personal mark on all his work and is definitely a director whose future films I look forward to seeing.
