Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Daniel B — 08 Nov 2010
One of the funniest comedies I've ever seen, very clever. The jokes are quick and witty, and the over-the top score by Danny Elfman sets them up well. For once De Niro's ordinary 'tough-guy' performance is balanced out in a way where we won't feel bad laughing at it.
Charles Grodin does a good job of complementing it and keeping it aligned. All the other actors play they're rolls stupendously. Dennis Farina is a hot tempered gangster who says morbid-funny lines every time you see him, which isn't very often so it makes it even better.
The story that plays out in this movie is a simple one, but why would you want to have it be super-intricate to throw audiences off? It's a comedy and a damn good too. I don't normally like De Niro when he grew into this "phase" of acting, but here it works perfectly.
