Review of Midnight Movies: From the Margin to the Mainstream (2006) by Joe B — 16 Mar 2008
One of my favorite film books has become a first-rate documentary, examining the phenomenon of the so-called "cult movie". Among the films discussed are El Topo, Night of the Living Dead, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pink Flamingos, Eraserhead, and more.
Although most of the film consists of talking head shots intercut with footage of the movies in question (as with the equally good documentary "Universal Horror"), the film never feels slow or cheap.
Interviewees include John Waters, David Lynch, George Romero, and the various movie theater owners who pioneered the idea of midnight screenings. Great stuff for any Cinemaslave.
