Review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) by Todd L — 25 Mar 2008
Every so often I can't resist watching this movie, despite the fact that it was a huge disappointment. The book is one of my all time favorites, an amazingly fascinating true story. The movie ends up playing like an episode of Matlock.
It's not without it's charms, though. Kevin Spacey was the perfect choice to play Jim Williams...but Jude Law as Billy is a walking Southern stereotype. You gotta hand it to Clint Eastwood for even trying though.
Read the book and you'll see this is not the easiest story to film. I thinik it would've worked better as a pseudo-documentary more like "The Kid Stays in the Picture," or something like that.
