Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Wayne M — 10 Nov 2012
Woody Allen has created a watchable, amiable, entertaining and nostalgic look at Paris that is probably his best film in years but also a reminder that it is a light year behind his earlier classic work.
It gives us small chuckles but lacks the acerbic wit of earlier films. It does paint Paris in a beautiful glow as we look at Gil, a frustrated writer who finds himself traveling back in time to the 1920s.
Nostalgia is the over riding theme here and sometimes it feels a little heavy handed. Also the cast is not as strong as one would like. Still it's pleasant and occasionally funny.
