Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Michael M — 27 Apr 2013
What a delightful movie. This is a nice, pleasant, lighthearted romp through a history of French culture. It's premise of a man traveling back in time and meeting significant figures in art history may seem a little esoteric and even pretentious at first, and even though the most cultured among us will probably have to Google a couple names from the film, it never feels esoteric or pretentious. It feels like a very loving homage to figures who are very important to writer/director Woody Allen. It combines all the things Allen loves and loves to put in a movie, feeling like a true Woody Allen film, and one of the best movies he's made in years.
I had a few moral quandaries with some of the main character's actions, but these were mostly minor and roughly forgivable, and hardly enough to effect the film negatively. It's a charming and beautiful movie with a great concept, great writing, and a wonderful message on the nature of nostalgia.
