Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Mloy X — 02 Jul 2013
Paul (Michael Sheen): Nostalgia is denial - denial of the painful present... the name for this denial is golden age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in - its a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present.
If there was a movie to make you fall in love with Paris all over again this would be it. I've always been somewhat of a closet Francophile and dreamed about going to the city of lights, but reality didn't live up to the romantic ideas I had of Paris. My sole visit there wasn't as magical as I anticipated, but this film gives me a bit of hope and makes me think that maybe the city deserves a second chance. I loved how Gil (Owen Wilson) found his voice as a writer and I equally loved all the great writers and painters influenced by this magical city. The story is as charming as the locale and makes you ****SPOIER ALERT*** want to run away to live in Paris like Gil did. I've never been much of a fan of either Owen WIlson nor Wooddy Allen, (I checked out this movie because of the wonderfully talented Michael Sheen and the adorable Rachel McAdams,,,,both favorite actors of mine), but if Wilson and Allen can produce quality flicks like this, I may have to check out other projects of theirs because this movie definitely made me a fan.
