Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Scott W — 02 May 2014
This may be my favorite Woody Allen movie. The scenes set in the 1920s are so charming - it's incredible to think how many influential figures lived in Paris in that time. For me the real highlight is Marion Cotillard.
She is so beautiful and has great chemistry with Owen Wilson, that you really want him to end up with her. The scenes set in the present day don't work as well for me, I think the characters are a little bit over the top.
But the older scenes more than make up for it. Woody Allen does a great job of lighting and staging Paris in a way that you can't help but love it (even if you've been there like I have and don't love it).
It also has a good underlying message about living in the present and appreciating what you have that really hits home once they go back to the 1800s.
