Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Lethe E — 27 Sep 2014
Watch as Our Hero discovers that no matter where you go, there you are. Woody Allen is a creepy guy, but he's great at homage, and this is one frothy homage to Paris, which, somehow, seems to have turned into an Allenesque version of New York, albeit with a French accent.
I guess you can take the filmmaker out of New York, but you'll never ever ever get New York out of this filmmaker. Midnight in Paris is a pretty little confection, and what's truly weird, given the subject matter, is that Allen has managed to get Owen Wilson to channel Allen himself, and his female actors to channel Diane Keaton.
And somehow he even manages to get Paris to channel Manhattan. Whatever, I recommend you don't ask any questions, just get in the car and go along for the ride.
