Review of Midnight in Paris (2011) by Eric L — 09 Oct 2014
This is surprisingly one of my absolute favorite Woody Allen films. With no offence to Owen Wilson but this was a rare time where he made a great movie even better, and he was the lead in 'Hall Pass' (need I say more).
Apart from the superb performances given to us by Wilson, Cotillard, McAdams, Bates, Hiddleston and so on, Allen conveys a deceptive thoughtfulness while being airily entertaining. What I mean is that while we jump with Gil from scene to scene, frame to frame and soiree to soiree, we are also exposed to artistic integrity, being misunderstood, individual stories and intangible obsession.
This film is a pleasant stroke of genius that does justice to a great city, a great era and most of all is poignant art... a must see!
