Review of Midnight Express (1978) by Alexandre R — 15 Jun 2008
Based on a true story, the movie chronicles the arrest of an American tourist in Istanbul for trying to slip in some hashish and his incarceration in a Turkish prison where he spends five years and comes very close to being a vegetable.
Oliver Stone's screenplay brings out the brutality of prison life (for Americans, it would be a Turkish / developing country prison, but prison life is hell anywhere). Made in 1978, the movie is remarkably gripping in its use of background score and cinematography.
Section 13 of the prison, for the criminally insane, is one of those nasty things that refuse to go away after the movie is long over.
