Review of Midnight Express (1978) by Cigdem S — 30 Jul 2008
Being curious about this movie for a long time, I am disappointed to see it was a complete waste of time. Except the beatings and the torture, there is hardly anything to sympathize with Billy Hayes' story.
In contempt of the country he is in, he thinks it would be easy to smuggle hashish and gets caught and to his surprise! he is jailed. In contempt of the court he is in, he calls the judge "pig" "fuck you".
He is the most violent character in the movie, killing two people in the most bloody way. This movie could have been better, since the story is interesting. However, it gives the impression that trusting the story, the director and the actors cared for nothing else.
None of the actors can speak Turkish, it is almost impossible to understand them when they do. It is so exaggerated and overdone that the effect is comical rather than tragic. And for the acting, except Brad Davis, who tried to portray the transformation from a young American who just made a small! mistake to a basically a savage, the acting is lame.
