Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Luis Angel G — 19 Oct 2008
The debate about whether De Niro or Pacino are the greatest actors of their generation should really be put to bed. Neither live up to Nicholson and he's lagging behind the brilliant Dustin Hoffman.
As is exemplified in Midnight Cowboy, Hoffman is quite superb as a crippled con-man down on his luck in New York city. The buddy dynamic between Hoffman and Voight's male-prostitute is interesting in its absurdness - a clash of warm, Texas blonde with muddied New York dirty browns and greens.
The film is hallucinogenic, difficult to watch, and poignant. The ending devastatingly affecting.
