Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Michael S — 10 May 2009
If this film had been made twenty years later, Guns N' Roses 'Welcome to the Jungle' might have replaced the classic 'Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nillson & George Tipton. Tragic and beautiful at the same time, this strange tale of friendship, trust and overall naiveness has moments of hilarity as well as deep sadness.
The plot consists of two men (a country bumpkin & a greasy street hustler) whose lives intersect in the same downward spiral caused by their own unrealistic expectations. Pathetic as they are, you can't help but feel overwhelmingly sorry for these characters, played brilliantly by Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman (Hoffman's BEST role perhaps).
