Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Luqman S — 21 Nov 2009
I was very surprised by this film. Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight both give fantastic performances. Jon Voight stars as Joe Buck, a cowboy who quits his job as a dishwasher in Texas and decides to move to New York City to become a male prostitute.
When he finally makes it to New York he finds out that "business" is a lot harder than he thought it was. After having no money and getting locked out of his apartment Joe meets a third-rate con man named Ratso (played by Dustin Hoffman) and the two form a very unlikely friendship.
Dustin Hoffman was just incredible in this film. The film falls a little flat about halfway through but Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight's performances pick it up again and will keep your eyes glued to the screen.
I also couldn't help but compare Joe Buck and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. They both went to New York to become something but when they both got there they were shocked at how dark and twisted the "hell hole" really was.
With amazing acting and a great story it's no surprise that Midnight Cowboy won the Academy Award for Best Picture. If you haven't seen then you are missing out!
