Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Alex K — 04 Aug 2010
A good film in a very typical late sixties fashion. It's shot in a very distinct style unique to that period, complete with the rapid edits and weird camera angles. It also has a gritty subject matter, and the film as a whole is quite provocative, and I can only imagine it was much more so when it premiered.
It was a little difficult to watch Jon Voight's bumbling around, but that was his character. And Hoffman is fantastic, and his famous improvised line is just great. The story is good, and it ends on a pretty good note, which is essentially get out of New York.
It's an interesting movie, and while I wouldn't say it's great on its own, I do think it deserves to be grouped in with the movies of the late sixties and early seventies that had a hand in changing cinema.
