Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Brian W — 23 Nov 2012
Midnight Cowboy is shocking, provocative, and just brilliant. Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman are mesmerizing together. Ratso to me is the most interesting character in this whole film. His whole attitude and life is an mystery to the audience.
We get to know Joe pretty well, but for the most part Ratso is an enigma. And for that reason I like Ratso. It tugs at my curiosity about what his life was like before he met Joe, and what his motives were to become friends with the most unlikely person out there.
It was obvious what the director was trying to go for when it came to what kind of relationship these two men had with each other. Their was no really hiding it. These two were lovers, and for that to be shown on the big screen in 1969 was a major step forward in the movie business.
Midnight Cowboy is definitely one of those films you have to see before you die.
