Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Ryan G — 14 Feb 2013
There's a disjointed feel to the story telling at times, but this is perhaps reflective of the counterculture and sexual revolution occuring in New York through the '60's. In similar way to how Taxi Driver represented a darker side of New York in the '70's, Midnight Cowboy brings to life a picture of New York we don't see today.
Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman are outstanding, providing an early breakaway from traditional comedy duos (Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello etc), perhaps being the first 'buddy film' of the modern era.
Importantly, for any gen x/y who grew up on Seinfeld/Simpsons/Forrest Gump etc, this is a must see, to understand many references that you may have missed over the years.
