Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Daniel M — 05 Aug 2010
"I ain't a real cowboy,but i'm one the hell of a stud!".
One of the saddest movies ever! One of the freatest too!
This movie not only touches your heart but it also that "part" of the life which was being avoided by filmmakers for so fucking much time.
The movie that redefined Hollywood, and totally changed the cinema's history(although Greetings was the first X rated american movie, well,it sucked, meanwhile,Midnight Cowboy set a new category).
It was about time that someone deared to fuck the censors by showing us a really rough and good drama at the same time. With a pretty simple plot(and highly original,BTW),John Schlesinger nailed at making one of the most beloved films of all times.
Well, the movie itself it's really cheering and depressing sometimes,it's really explicit as well,it can be sacrilegious sometimes,it has explicits drugs usage and sex scenes too,and it has one of the most disturbing, nearly incestuous(never specified)family relationship.Another "tabues" featured in this film are also the homosexualism and rape scenes...
Ending:(Spoiler)Although I nearly cried when Ratso died,i think that his death was necesary,i mean,he was a lost cause and if he had recovered,Buck would have returned to his past life.
Soundtrack:Oh,well, the soundtrack plays a really important role in here, the harmonica plays are so beautiful,so perfect and it also features one of the greatest original movie songs ever, the hit Everybody's Talkin' by Nilsson.
Actings:Jhon Voight is giving the performance of his life in here!,he's just playing epic!.Fuck Kramer vs Kramer, fuck Rainman,Dustin Hoffman greatest role is as Ratso in here!,his second is the one in The Graduate.
The Oscar:Only three oscars(it won the big one,but still,it deserved more)? although there were four masterpieces in 1969,only two were nominated:Midnight Cowboy and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid,i think Cowboy really deserved some more(Sorry, but Butch is just a li'l bit inferior in my opinion)i mean, the performances are epic, the hit song ,is well,a hit song!I think the oscar was going to award some other movie, but they noticed this movie was really great...
Unique Stuff:
-Best John Schlesinger movie.
-Best Dustin Hoffman performance.
-Best Jhon Voight performance.
-A mayor hit movie-song(top 10).
-One of the greatest endings ever(top 20).
-(Spoiler) A killer never gets caught!
-First rape scene(male-female).
-First rape scene(male-male).
-First homosexual sex scene.
-First "incestuous" relationship ever.
-First time someone gets fisted.Lol!
I like explicit movies, damn it! haha one of my faves.
"That fancy suit you've been parading around in these last couple years, that there's a hanin' suit. All gussied up and dead inside, that ain't you. And I'll tell you another thing; this night ain't over yet. This midnight cowboy's got some fight left in him, and something tells me you do too. Ho, now!" (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian(2009)).
"I ain't no midnight cowboy, or nothing like that!"(Detroit Rock City-1999).
