Review of Middle Men (2009) by Caleb N — 07 Aug 2010
The sleaze present in this "fall from grace" story is palpable, but don't let that keep you away from this sufficiently entertaining drama. Luke Wilson stars as a smooth-talking "fix-it" man, brought in to smooth the edges of an upstart internet company run by two lowlifes (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht).
Their crazy idea: to invent a way to process financial transactions over the internet, namely those involving pornography. Mix in the Russian mob and a seedy lawyer (James Caan), and you have the recipe for a movie that oozes dread - along with a playful sarcasm that shades the performances well.
We've seen this story before (think "Casino" or "Boogie Nights"), but director George Gallo manages to keep it interesting and brisk, and he has given Wilson his best role in years.
